Rerouting a dryer vent in Manhattan Beach

Lot coverage here is tight. Postwar stucco homes put the dryer against an exterior wall behind the garage or service porch. Coastal rebuilds and townhomes stack laundry on the second or third floor, so the duct climbs interior walls to a roof cap. Rerouting means picking a shorter path, not just replacing pipe. The decision starts with where the duct can legally and physically go.

Most reroutes we do solve one of a few problems. A long horizontal garage run that sags between ceiling joists and pools lint at the low points. A roof termination with no bird screen that keeps collecting nests. Or a laundry conversion from an older unpermitted remodel that dumps moist air into the garage or attic. Each one gets a different fix. Dropping a sidewall termination usually beats keeping a roof run alive.

The work is rigid metal duct, foil tape, no screws inside the airstream, and elbows counted against the run length. Flexible foil or vinyl behind the machine gets replaced with a short rigid transition. Louvered or screened caps come off; a hooded cap with a swinging damper goes on.

What changes the job: joist direction, stucco versus siding, attic access, and whether a shared chase in a condo can be touched at all.
